"Through teaching others... we discover ourselves!"  -  Sigung Ronald Chiang

i find this very interesting as it correlates with one of my favourite rabbinic sayings.

To paraphrase this saying, "I have learned from my teachers, and I have learned from my peers, but I have learned most from my students. And that is a continuous process of learning."

anyway, is this self discovery the most important aspect of teaching to you? or do you enjoy other aspects more? (ie. watching students grow, passing on your own knowledge, etc...)

"Self-Discovery"... huh?  To me, that is an important aspect of teaching.  It is not the most important thing for me.  It does rate very high on my list though.

It is difficult for me to describe the most important aspect of teaching.  There are so many aspects to teaching that are important to me.  I believe every benefit that comes from teaching is part of the whole aspect.  The total ‘aspect of teaching’ starts with service.  It is difficult for most people to humble themselves to become a teacher.  Most believe that it is a position of ‘Leadership’ or ‘Power’.  I believe this position to be one of ‘Sacrifice’, ‘Duty’ and ‘Honor’.  It is difficult to take your eyes off of yourself and place them on others.  That is why I believe that being a teacher is the highest form of ‘service’!

However, if I must choose the most important thing... it would have to be ‘Witnessing a student’s growth beyond their own initial limitations.’  Seeing someone accomplish a task that was once considered impossible to him or her is very gratifying to me.  I love to see when a person changes their whole perception of the ‘possibilities’ in their world.

I think most students do not recognize the nature of Kung Fu.  Kung Fu is a tool used to unlock the potential that every Human Being has within them.  Kung Fu is a vehicle, where you can learn focus and drive, to achieve the ‘supposed’ impossible!  Kung Fu is one of the highest forms of ‘human expression’.  Kung Fu is nothing more than LIFE!

“Self-Discovery” is found in every aspect of ‘Shaolin Lohan Kung Fu’.  Whether is through study of it or the teaching of it.  They are both the same.  Whether it is towards oneself or to others that you have committed yourself to.  They both require… HONOR!
